About Broadband Capital

Broadband Capital Limited develops and delivers transformational and inclusive public services using new technologies.

The link between exclusion and transformation is simple: excluded groups are the hardest to reach and the most expensive to service. Creating tailored, responsive and personalised digital services for these groups improves the quality of life for the individual, while reducing the cost of meeting their needs.

Our strategy is to focus on the needs of the most expensive groups and to build compelling services that benefit individuals, reduce costs for service providers and realise policy outcomes for Government.

What's in a name? PDF Print

30th September 2008

It's often the case with pilot projects that no one is quite sure what to call the finished product, and you can spend an awful lot of time throwing ideas around. Fortunately, the two STREAM products have what you might call a ‘does what it says on the tin’ quality to them, so we didn’t waste hours agonising over names, and came up with ... drum roll and trumpet fanfare! ... STREAM personal TV and STREAM safe and sound (the home monitoring service).

The new user interface for STREAM personal TV is about to be launched.  If you've been following the project for some time, you'll know that we've spent a lot of time and effort getting user feedback, and the new interface has been driven by that.  An exciting addition to the service is NHS Choices, which gives users personalised information on local health services, including street maps.  This is a significant milestone for the project: the first example of service providers making information of this kind available through STREAM personal TV.

We’ve also made some changes to the STREAM websites, and as from today www.streamonline.co.uk is the home of STREAM personal TV. No change to the Broadband Capital (BCL) website (www.broadbandcapital.co.uk) which will continue to provide background information on the BCL project.

The STREAM Mobile Platform: Update PDF Print

STREAM on Mobile

As mobile phone technology moves on, so have the capabilities of the devices we use on a daily basis. Most handsets on the market can now get emails, access the internet and run & store media rich content, such as video, music and images.

At Broadband Capital, we recognized at an early stage the significant impact that this delivery platform would eventually have, basically allowing the public and private sector to communicate with their clients and target audience in a personalized and targeted manner.

We have been working with emerging technologies over the last 2 years to find ways to better serve content to this new media platform, and have developed a number of concept applications catering for a wide user audience.

By taking advantage of technologies such as Adobe Flash Lite, we are able to create and deploy applications that can access... Read More..

An Occuptational Therapist talks about the STREAM Services PDF Print

18th September 2008

Anne the OT

‘Stream will provide an assistant who doesn’t get overloaded, always says the right thing, and is on duty 24/7.’

One of the major issues I have to deal with in my job is that I spend a lot of time giving patients basic, generic information, rather than actually treating them. Therefore, a service that can provide that information in video format, which patients can watch at home, whenever they choose, and as many times as they wish, would be invaluable. And, of course, the same information could be shown in hospital OT unit waiting rooms if the service was available there.

So what sort of information do I want my patients to have? To start with, how to find the OT department at their local hospital, and what an OT session will be like. Patients are often anxious about these things, so a video showing things such as a splint being made, a kitchen assessment/practice, a dressing practice, or any example relevant to the service, would help to put them at ease, and in turn make our job less stressful. Another area of potential confusion for patients is the difference between hospital, community and social services – people sometimes confuse us with occupational health!

There’s a wide range of information that OTs need to disseminate – where to get equipment... Read More..
